Ear Reconstruction Through Medical Innovation
Recently, we had the privilege of taking part in a groundbreaking and emotionally moving case: six-year-old Lavi was born with microtia – a congenital condition that results in the underdevelopment of the outer ear. For children in this situation, the absence of an ear is not merely an aesthetic concern but also a significant social and emotional challenge.
At Schneider Children's Medical Center of Israel, under the leadership of Dr. Asaf Olshinka, a specialist in plastic surgery and head of the craniofacial surgery service, an innovative ear reconstruction procedure was performed for the first time in Israel, utilizing advanced imaging and 3D printing technology.
During the planning phase, we at Synergy3DMed conducted a precise 3D scan of Lavi’s face, which served as the basis for designing an accurate model of his ear. Once the digital files were prepared, they were sent to Poriferous, LLC for the production of the implant using the specialized material Su-Por Biomaterial. Additionally, we developed jigs (PSI) to ensure the optimal placement of the new ear, allowing it to integrate seamlessly and naturally with Lavi’s facial structure.
During the surgery, the implant was covered with vascularized tissue from the temple, followed by a layer of skin taken from Lavi’s body to achieve the best possible match in color and texture. The advantage of this new technique lies in its ability to enable reconstruction at a younger age before starting first grade - and in a single stage, unlike traditional methods that require multiple procedures and involve greater discomfort.
Dr. Asaf Olshinka noted: “The use of 3D technology allows us to provide children with a personalized solution that enhances not only their external appearance but also their self-image and confidence.”
Lavi’s mother, Shani, shared that ever since the surgery, he hasn’t stopped looking in the mirror and admiring his new ear—nothing could be more heartwarming.
This success joins a series of life-saving and life-enhancing surgeries performed at Schneider’s innovative development center, which specializes in the creation of personalized medical devices using 3D printing and artificial intelligence. The center enables groundbreaking procedures, reduces risks, and shortens both surgical and recovery times - transforming the lives of many children for the better.
The combination of advanced medical expertise, cutting-edge technology, and close collaboration between medical teams and developers represents the future of personalized medicine.
